Mashpi Lodge, one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World, is built with the latest techniques in sustainable building and is designed to blend beautifully with its surroundings, while keeping its creatures safely at bay – a luxury cocoon amid the clouds and tumbling mountains. The rooms are arranged over three floors, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, some on two sides, and with the forest just a few meters away!
The lodge’s 3 Yaku Suites feature a large bathroom with twin washbasins and Philippe Starck-designed bathtubs that have a view into the forest. All of the Yaku Suites have king-size beds. Mashpi Lodge also has 20 Wayra Rooms; 13 Wayra Twin Rooms have 2 full-size beds and 7 Wayra King Rooms feature king-size beds. For families or groups of friends, three pairs of Wayra Rooms inter-connect, each one with a king-size bed connected to a room with two full-size beds. The Wawa Room is perfect for single travelers, this room is smaller than the other rooms and features a comfortable full-sized bed and all the amenities of the larger rooms, offering a more minimalist feel without sacrificing comfort. With capacity for just one guest, this room is ideal for solo travelers.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Quito - Mashpi Lodge
Your adventure begins at around 8 AM at one of the main hotels in Quito, when you will be picked up by Mashpi transportation for your journey to Mashpi Lodge together with other travelers. The road passes along the western slope of the Andes and you will pass the “Middle of the World” monument, which marks the equatorial line. We then continue westwards, downhill, and we will be able to observe how the vegetation changes with every significant drop in altitude. After passing the town of Nanegalito, we head northwest, along winding country roads, passing the archaeological site of Tulipe and various farming communities. We arrive at Mashpi Lodge around noon.
Your time at Mashpi is your own to experience. With the help of the expedition staff, you can choose from any of the activities on offer, always accompanied by an English speaking naturalist guide and an experienced local guide – all at your own pace. On your arrival day, you will plan your activities with the team and receive a talk about Mashpi and all its wonders.
After lunch you will be shown to your room for a rest, before heading out in the afternoon for your activity, which could include a hike through the forest followed by gliding above and through the forest canopy aboard the amazing and unique Dragonfly aerial cable car.
When darkness falls, a new troupe of creatures emerges: your guides will accompany you in search out frogs, snakes, insects and even tarantulas during a night walk. Overnight at Mashpi Lodge.
Meals included: Lunch/Dinner
Day 2: Mashpi Lodge
Today might begin at first light on the panoramic terrace, watching and hearing a menagerie of birds stirring around the lodge. After breakfast you could hike towards a waterfall, bathing in the tremendous crash of water, head to the hummingbird garden, or discover the winged wonders of the life centre’s butterflies.
After lunch, how about pedalling between two points of the forest around 200 m. (655 ft.) apart on the aerial sky bike, followed by a climb up the observation tower to take in the reserve in its entirety and watch the sun go down behind the clouds.
For the evening, we have prepared a series of different lectures such as the “Secret Wildlife of Mashpi: the Camera Trap Project,” “The Choco: a Biological Hotspot” about the formation and diversity of the Chocó, or about our scientific research projects. The lectures will be given by one of our naturalists or our resident biologist at 7:30 PM. Overnight at Mashpi Lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
